Common Emergencies and What to Do Before You Reach Our Office

A dental emergency can happen without warning. Knowing how to respond in those first few minutes gives you the best chance at a good outcome. Here are the situations we see most often and what you can do right now while you get ready to come in.
Knocked-Out Tooth

Hold the tooth by the top (the crown) only. Do not touch or wipe the root. Rinse gently with water if needed, but leave any attached tissue alone. Try to place the tooth back into the socket and bite down softly on a clean cloth to keep it steady. If that is not possible, store it in milk or tuck it between your cheek and gum to keep it moist. Time matters here. Call us right away because the sooner we see you, the higher the chance we can save it.

Rinse your mouth gently with warm water and apply a cold compress against your cheek to manage swelling. Collect any pieces you can find and bring them to your appointment. Stay off that side when chewing and contact us as soon as you can.

A warm salt water rinse can help calm inflammation. Use floss gently to clear anything that may be trapped between your teeth. Over-the-counter pain medication can take the edge off until we can see you. Never place aspirin directly against the gum tissue, as it can cause a burn.

If your crown has come loose, try sliding it back over the tooth temporarily. A thin layer of denture adhesive or toothpaste inside the crown can help it stay put. For a missing filling, sugar-free gum or over-the-counter dental cement can cover the exposed area. Chew on the opposite side and give us a call so we can repair it quickly.

Gently work dental floss around the area to free the object. Avoid using anything sharp or metal, which can cut your gums or scratch your enamel. If floss does not do the job, call us and we will take care of it safely.

For any cuts to your lips, tongue, cheeks, or gums, rinse with a mild salt water solution and apply firm pressure with clean gauze or a damp cloth. Keep pressure steady for 15 to 20 minutes. If the bleeding has not slowed by then, head to the nearest emergency room or call us for next steps.

What to Expect During an Emergency Visit

A dental emergency is stressful, and not knowing what comes next can make it worse. Here is exactly how we handle urgent visits at our Mountain Home office so you know what to expect from the moment you walk in.
1

Focused Exam and Imaging

We get you into a chair right away and perform a targeted examination of the affected area. Using our CBCT 3D imaging and digital scanner, we see exactly what is happening beneath the surface. Whether it is a fracture, infection, or damaged nerve, advanced imaging gives us a precise diagnosis so we can act with confidence and skip the guesswork.
2

Same-Day Treatment and Relief

Once we know the source of the problem, we get to work immediately. Many emergency treatments, including extractions, temporary restorations, and same-day CEREC crowns, can be completed in a single visit. We also offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation so you stay comfortable throughout the procedure.
3

Aftercare and Next Steps

Before you leave, we walk you through everything you need to know for a smooth recovery. That includes aftercare instructions, any medication guidance, and a clear plan for follow-up if additional treatment is needed. You leave knowing exactly what to do at home and what comes next.

You Do Not Have to Wait It Out

We prioritize emergency patients and work to get you into a chair as quickly as possible. When you call with an urgent issue, our team moves fast to open time in the schedule so you are not left waiting in pain.

Our office is equipped with CBCT 3D imaging, digital scanning, and in-office milling, which means we can diagnose the problem precisely and begin treatment without delays or guesswork.

Dental emergencies are stressful enough without added anxiety. We offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation to keep you calm and comfortable throughout your treatment.

With our CEREC same-day crown system, many restorations that would normally take multiple appointments can be completed in a single visit. You walk in with a broken tooth and walk out with a permanent repair.

Even in an urgent situation, we take the time to explain your options clearly. You will understand exactly what is happening and why before any treatment begins. No surprises, no upselling.

We know an emergency visit is not how anyone wants to spend their day. From the moment you call to the moment you leave, our goal is to make you feel safe, heard, and taken care of.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental Emergency FAQs

We know emergencies come with a lot of questions, and we are happy to answer every one of them. If you do not see your concern listed below, call us and we will walk you through it.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe tooth pain, a knocked-out or broken tooth, a lost crown or filling, facial swelling, and uncontrolled bleeding all qualify. If you are unsure whether your situation is urgent, call us. We would rather hear from you early than have you wait while the problem gets worse.
We prioritize emergency patients and work to get you in as soon as possible, often the same day you call. When you contact our office, our team assesses the urgency of your situation and opens time in the schedule so you are not left sitting in pain.
Your comfort is our priority from the moment you sit down. We offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation to keep you relaxed and pain-free throughout the procedure. Dr. Gigli and our team also check in with you during treatment to make sure you are feeling okay.
For most dental injuries and pain, our office in Mountain Home is the right place to be. Emergency rooms can address swelling and infection but typically cannot perform dental procedures. If you are experiencing trouble breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, or a possible jaw fracture, head to the nearest emergency room or call 911 first.
Time is critical. Hold the tooth by the crown only, rinse it gently with water, and try to place it back into the socket. If that is not possible, keep it moist in milk or between your cheek and gum. Then get to our office as quickly as you can.
In many cases, yes. Our CEREC same-day crown system allows us to scan, design, mill, and place a permanent restoration in a single appointment. For more complex breaks, we may place a temporary restoration first and schedule a follow-up to complete the repair.
Over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen can help take the edge off. A warm salt water rinse may also reduce inflammation. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, as this can burn the tissue. Apply a cold compress to your face if you notice any swelling.
Dental emergencies rarely improve on their own. A small crack can turn into a full break, and an untreated infection can spread to surrounding teeth or bone. The sooner we see you, the more options we have and the simpler the treatment tends to be.
Absolutely. We treat patients of all ages and understand that a dental emergency can be especially frightening for younger patients. Our team takes a calm, gentle approach so your child feels safe and comfortable throughout the visit.
Bring any broken tooth fragments, a loose crown, or your current restoration if it has come out. If you have recent dental records or X-rays from another provider, those can be helpful too. Beyond that, just get here and we will handle the rest.
