Do Any of These Sound Familiar?

Jaw pain has a way of quietly taking over more of your daily life than you realize. If you’ve been managing discomfort, clicking sounds, or tension headaches for a while, you’re far from alone.
  • Waking up with jaw pain or soreness
  • Headaches that won't seem to go away
  • Clicking or popping sounds when chewing
  • Avoiding certain foods because of jaw discomfort
  • Tension spreading to your neck and shoulders
  • Grinding your teeth without being able to stop
  • If any of these feel familiar, relief is possible. TMJ treatment is designed to address what's actually driving your symptoms.

What Happens When You Keep Waiting?

  • Symptoms Get More Intense

Mild jaw tension can deepen into daily pain that disrupts work, sleep, and meals.

  • Teeth Wear Down Faster

Grinding and clenching gradually damage enamel, making future restorative work more involved.

  • Headaches Become More Frequent

Without treatment, tension patterns often escalate and become harder to break.

  • Treatment Options Narrow

Addressing TMJ earlier generally means simpler, less intensive care.

  • Sleep Quality Suffers

Nighttime clenching and jaw tension compound over time, affecting rest and recovery.

  • Costs Increase Over Time

Delaying care often means addressing secondary damage, like worn teeth, in addition to the joint itself.

  • Addressing TMJ symptoms now typically means a simpler path, fewer complications, and faster relief.

What Is TMJ Disorder and How Is It Treated?

TMJ disorder occurs when the temporomandibular joint, the hinge connecting your jaw to your skull, becomes inflamed or strained. This joint guides every bite, word, and yawn you take. When it isn’t functioning properly, the effects can spread well beyond the jaw, showing up as headaches, neck tension, ear ringing, and tooth wear. Causes range from teeth grinding and clenching to stress, injury, or bite misalignment.

At The Dome Dentistry and Implants, TMJ treatment in Mountain Home starts with a thorough diagnostic evaluation. We use dental X-rays, CT scans, and when appropriate, MRI imaging to understand exactly what’s happening with your joint and bite. From there, care is tailored to your specific pattern of symptoms, which means the approach you receive is based on your anatomy and history, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

  • TMJ disorder affects an estimated 10 million Americans, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research
  • Symptoms often extend beyond the jaw, including migraines, neck pain, and ear discomfort
  • Many TMJ cases are successfully managed without surgery
  • Benefits of TMJ Treatment

TMJ treatment does more than quiet the clicking or ease the soreness. Understanding what becomes possible after care can help you see why addressing it matters well beyond your jaw.
  • Sleep Without Jaw Tension
  • Stop Waking With Headaches
  • Eat Without Discomfort or Restriction
  • Reduce Neck and Shoulder Tension
  • Protect Teeth From Grinding Damage
  • Speak and Laugh With Ease

Is TMJ Treatment Right for You?

Many people aren’t sure whether what they’re experiencing qualifies as TMJ disorder. The range of qualifying symptoms is broader than most expect, and a proper evaluation is often the first time patients connect the dots between jaw discomfort and other issues they’ve been managing.
  • Experiencing regular jaw pain, stiffness, or soreness
  • Noticing clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when chewing or speaking
  • Waking up with headaches, facial tension, or a sore jaw
  • Currently using a night guard that isn't providing enough relief
  • Have been told you grind your teeth during sleep
  • Not Sure If This Fits Your Situation?

That uncertainty is completely normal with TMJ disorder, since symptoms vary widely from person to person. A TMJ consultation gives us the chance to evaluate your jaw function, review your symptoms, and give you a clear picture of what’s happening and what can help.

What to Expect During TMJ Treatment

Many patients tell us they were relieved to find how straightforward TMJ care can be once they understood the process. Every step is designed around your comfort, and we take time to make sure you know exactly what’s ahead before we begin.
    1

    Comprehensive Evaluation

You'll start with a thorough review of your symptoms, dental history, and bite function. We use diagnostic imaging, including X-rays and CT scans when needed, to build a precise picture of your joint health and identify the underlying patterns driving your discomfort. This step shapes everything that follows.

    2

    Personalized Treatment Planning

Once we understand what's happening, we walk you through a customized plan built specifically for your symptoms. This might include oral appliance therapy, bite adjustment, or a combination of approaches. You'll have the opportunity to ask questions and understand each recommendation before any care begins.

    3

    Treatment and Ongoing Support

Treatment is typically gentle and non-invasive. If an oral appliance is prescribed, it will be custom-fitted for comfort and effectiveness. We monitor your progress over time, adjusting as needed, so that relief builds steadily and your results hold.

Ready to Finally Find Relief from Jaw Pain?

What to Expect After TMJ Treatment

Most patients are surprised by how manageable the adjustment period is with TMJ treatment. Healing takes time, but the process is generally straightforward, and our team stays with you throughout.

    First 24-48 Hours

You may notice mild jaw soreness or sensitivity following your initial visit or appliance fitting. This is normal and typically settles quickly. Eating softer foods and avoiding hard or chewy items during this window helps your jaw adjust comfortably.

    First 1-2 Weeks

As your jaw muscles begin to relax and adapt, most patients notice a meaningful reduction in headaches and morning soreness. Wearing your appliance consistently during this period is important for building the habit and seeing steady progress. Most patients find this phase easier than expected.

    Long-Term Healing

TMJ relief often continues to improve over weeks and months as muscle tension patterns shift and your joint stabilizes. Periodic check-ins allow us to monitor progress and make any refinements to your treatment plan along the way.

Every patient’s recovery is a little different depending on the severity of symptoms and how long they’ve been present. We’ll provide a clear, personalized aftercare plan and remain available to answer questions at any point during your care.

TMJ Treatment vs. No Treatment and Night Guard Therapy

Several options exist for managing TMJ symptoms, and what works best depends on the severity of your condition, your goals, and how long you’ve been experiencing discomfort. Here’s how our comprehensive TMJ treatment approach compares to common alternatives.
Factor TMJ Treatment No Treatment / Managing at Home Night Guard Therapy
Addresses root cause Yes, diagnostic-driven care No, symptoms managed only Partially, protects teeth
Symptom relief Comprehensive and lasting Temporary at best Reduces tooth grinding impact
Headache improvement Common outcome Unlikely Possible in some cases
Teeth protection Yes, includes prevention No Primary benefit
Jaw muscle relief Yes, targeted Limited Limited
Customization High, built around your symptoms None Moderate (custom fit)
Monitoring and adjustment Yes, ongoing None Minimal
    Long-term value High Low Moderate
TMJ treatment offers the most comprehensive path when symptoms are persistent or affecting multiple areas of daily life, including sleep, eating, and overall comfort. Night guards serve a valuable role in protecting teeth, and in mild cases they may provide some relief. For many patients, however, a more complete approach addresses what a guard alone cannot. A consultation will help clarify which level of care fits your specific situation.

    TMJ Treatment FAQs

TMJ disorder raises a lot of questions, especially because its symptoms can seem unrelated to dental care. Here are answers to what we hear most often, so you can feel informed and confident going into your consultation.

    What exactly causes TMJ disorder?

TMJ disorder has several potential causes, including teeth grinding, clenching, bite misalignment, stress, injury to the jaw, and arthritis affecting the joint. In many cases, it’s a combination of factors rather than a single trigger. A thorough evaluation helps identify which are most relevant for you.
Headaches caused by TMJ disorder often originate at the temples or behind the eyes and tend to be worst in the morning. If your headaches coincide with jaw tightness, tooth grinding, or facial tension, there’s a reasonable chance the joint is involved. An evaluation can help confirm the connection.
Most TMJ care is non-invasive and comfortable. Some patients experience mild jaw soreness after an evaluation or when first adjusting to an oral appliance, but significant discomfort is uncommon. Our approach prioritizes your comfort throughout every step.
The majority of TMJ cases are managed successfully without surgery. Non-surgical options, including oral appliances and bite therapy, resolve symptoms for most patients. Surgical options exist for severe structural issues, but they represent a small percentage of cases overall.
Treatment length varies based on symptom severity and how long the condition has been present. Many patients notice meaningful improvement within a few weeks. More complex cases may require several months of monitoring and adjustment. We’ll give you a realistic timeline after your evaluation
Symptoms can recur, particularly if contributing factors like stress, grinding habits, or bite issues aren’t fully addressed. Ongoing care, consistent appliance use when prescribed, and periodic check-ins significantly reduce the likelihood of symptoms returning.
Your evaluation includes a review of your symptoms and dental history, an examination of your jaw movement and bite, and diagnostic imaging when appropriate. The goal is to build a clear picture of what’s happening before recommending any treatment.
It’s never too late to address TMJ symptoms. While longer-standing cases may take more time to resolve, meaningful relief is still achievable. Starting treatment sooner reduces the risk of additional wear on your teeth and joints, but there is no point at which care stops being worthwhile.
No referral is needed. You can call us directly to schedule a TMJ consultation. We’ll assess your symptoms and help determine the most appropriate next steps based on what we find.
Occasional jaw soreness after a long meal or stressful day is common and usually resolves on its own. TMJ disorder involves persistent symptoms that affect daily life, including recurring headaches, clicking sounds, limited jaw movement, or soreness that returns regularly. If symptoms are frequent or worsening, an evaluation is worthwhile.
