Does Your Tooth Pain Feel All Too Familiar?

A cracked, decayed, or weakened tooth affects more than just your mouth. It changes how you eat, how you feel, and sometimes how freely you smile. If any of this sounds like your situation, you’re not alone.
  • Avoiding foods you love: Chewing on one side to dodge the pain
  • Embarrassed by a visible crack: Holding back your smile in photos
  • Tooth is sensitive or aching: Hot, cold, or sweets trigger sharp discomfort
  • Skipping meals you enjoy: Steak, apples, crunchy foods are off the table
  • Putting off treatment: Worry about multiple visits keeps you from calling
  • Tooth getting worse over time: The damage is spreading and you know it
  • If any of these hit close to home, relief is closer than you think. A same-day crown can restore your tooth and your daily comfort in a single visit.

The Longer You Wait, the More Complex It Gets

  • Damage Spreads Deeper

Cracks and decay extend further into the tooth root structure over time.

  • Infection Risk Rises

An untreated damaged tooth creates an opening for bacteria to reach the pulp.

  • Extraction Becomes Likely

What could be saved today may need to be removed if decay progresses far enough.

  • Treatment Gets More Involved

A crown today may become a root canal plus a crown after a delay.

  • Costs Climb

Simple restorations now are almost always less expensive than complex treatment later.

  • Adjacent Teeth Feel the Strain

You compensate by chewing elsewhere, putting stress on healthy teeth.

  • The best time to restore a damaged tooth is before the problem grows. Getting in now means a faster, simpler path to feeling like yourself again.

What Are Same-Day Crowns and How Do They Work?

A dental crown is a custom-fitted cap placed over a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth to restore its shape, strength, and function. Traditional crowns required two separate appointments and a temporary restoration in between. Same-day crowns change that entirely. Using in-office CAD/CAM technology (computer-aided design and milling), your crown is designed and fabricated chairside during a single visit. The result is a permanent, precisely fitted restoration without the wait.

Our CEREC milling system at The Dome Dentistry & Implants takes the process from digital scan to finished crown without sending anything to an outside lab. Patients throughout Mountain Home and the surrounding area can have a tooth fully restored in one appointment, using ceramic or zirconia blocks that are milled, stained, and glazed to match the natural color and contour of your smile.

  • Crowns are typically milled chairside in 10-15 minutes
  • Materials include ceramic and zirconia for natural appearance and durability
  • The ADA reports that dental crowns are among the most commonly placed restorations in the U.S.
  • Transformations That Last

Watch real patients share how their dental journey restored not just their smiles, but their quality of life. These personal stories capture the relief and joy that come with comprehensive, caring treatment.

Is a Same-Day Crown the Right Fit for You?

Many people assume they might not qualify for a same-day crown, or that the process only works for certain situations. In reality, same-day crown treatment is a good fit for a wide range of patients and dental conditions. You might be a great candidate if you:
  • Have a cracked, chipped, or fractured tooth that needs reinforcement
  • Have significant decay that a filling can no longer address effectively
  • Currently have an old crown that is failing, cracked, or coming loose
  • Want to restore a tooth in a single visit without returning for a second appointment
  • Have a weakened tooth following a root canal that needs protection
  • Not Sure If a Crown Is What You Need?

If you’re uncertain whether a crown is the right next step, a consultation will give you a clear answer. We’ll evaluate your tooth, explain your options for same-day crown treatment, and make sure you leave with a plan that fits your actual situation, not a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

What to Expect During Your Same-Day Crown Appointment

Most patients tell us the process is far smoother than they expected, and many are surprised by how comfortable the entire visit feels. Every step is designed to keep you at ease while we handle the work.
    1

    Exam and Tooth Preparation

We start by thoroughly examining the tooth and removing any decay or damaged structure. The area is numbed so you feel comfortable throughout. Once the tooth is shaped to receive the crown, we have a clean foundation to work from. You'll feel pressure but no pain, and we'll check in with you throughout.

    2

    Digital Scan

Instead of traditional impressions with putty, we use our Shining 3D intraoral scanner to capture a precise digital image of your prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. The scan is quick, comfortable, and far more accurate than a physical mold. You'll see the 3D image of your tooth on screen in real time.

    3

    Crown Design

Your crown is designed digitally using CEREC software, allowing us to match the shape, size, and bite to your existing teeth with precision. This step ensures the fit is right before a single block of material is touched. We can fine-tune the design before milling begins.

    4

    Crown Milling and Finishing

Your crown is milled directly from a ceramic or zirconia block in our in-office CEREC unit, typically in about 10-15 minutes. Once milled, it is stained and glazed to match the natural shade of your teeth before final preparation for placement.

    5

    Placement and Final Check

The finished crown is placed, adjusted for your bite, and bonded securely to your tooth. We check your comfort and bite carefully before you leave. Most patients walk out the same day with a fully restored tooth that feels natural from the start.

What to Expect After Your Crown Appointment

Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how quickly they feel back to normal. A same-day crown appointment involves minimal downtime, and most people return to their regular routine the same day.

    First 24-48 Hours

Some mild sensitivity and tenderness around the treated tooth and gums is normal in the first day or two. This typically fades quickly. Softer foods are recommended for the first 24 hours while the area settles. Most patients manage any minor discomfort easily with over-the-counter pain relief.

    First Week

Sensitivity to temperature may continue for a few days as your tooth adjusts to the new crown. This is a normal part of healing and usually resolves on its own. If your bite feels slightly off or the crown feels high when you close your teeth together, a brief follow-up adjustment can resolve that quickly.

Every patient heals at their own pace, and some teeth are more sensitive than others after crown placement. We’ll provide you with specific aftercare instructions before you leave, and our team is always available if you have questions during your recovery.

Same-Day Crowns vs. Inlays, Onlays, Veneers, and Dental Bonding

Several options exist for restoring or improving damaged teeth, and the right choice depends on the extent of the damage, your goals, and the health of the tooth structure involved. Same-day crowns are one of the most comprehensive single-visit options available, but other treatments may be appropriate in certain cases.
Factor Same-Day Crown Inlay / Onlay Veneer Dental Bonding
Best suited for Significant decay, cracks, weakened teeth Moderate decay, damaged cusps Cosmetic surface improvements Minor chips, small gaps, discoloration
Coverage Full tooth coverage Partial (within or over cusps) Front surface only Surface only
Visits required 1 (same day) Typically 2 Typically 2 1
Longevity (with proper care) 15-30+ years 10-20 years 10-15 years 5-10 years
Strength and durability High High Moderate Lower
Tooth structure removed Moderate Minimal to moderate Minimal Minimal
Material options Ceramic, zirconia Porcelain, zirconia, gold, composite Porcelain Composite resin
Natural appearance Excellent Excellent Excellent Good
Maintenance required Standard brushing and flossing Standard brushing and flossing Standard brushing and flossing Standard, avoid staining foods
Same-day crowns offer the most complete, durable protection for a tooth that has experienced significant decay, structural damage, or previous large fillings. Inlays, onlays, veneers, and bonding each serve a purpose, and some patients are better candidates for those options depending on how much tooth structure remains intact. We’ll evaluate your tooth and walk you through which option gives you the best outcome for your specific situation.

    Same-Day Crown FAQs

You probably have a few questions before committing to any dental procedure. The following answers address what we hear most often from patients considering same-day crown treatment. If yours isn’t here, we’re glad to answer it directly.

How long does a same-day crown appointment actually take?

Most same-day crown appointments run between 90 minutes and two hours from start to finish. That includes numbing, tooth preparation, scanning, crown design, milling, and final placement. The milling step alone typically takes 10-15 minutes. It’s a longer single visit, but it completely replaces what used to be two separate appointments.
Same-day crowns are made from the same high-quality ceramic and zirconia materials used in lab-fabricated crowns. The primary difference is where the crown is made, not the material quality. Many patients find their same-day crowns feel just as natural and hold up just as well over time with standard care.
Yes. The digital design process allows us to match the shape, size, and color of your crown closely to the surrounding teeth. We stain and glaze the crown before placement for a natural appearance. The goal is for the crown to blend in so well that most people, including you, won’t be able to identify it.
The area is numbed thoroughly before any preparation begins. Most patients feel pressure during the procedure but report little to no discomfort during treatment. Some sensitivity in the days after is normal as the tooth settles, but this typically fades quickly.
A filling restores a portion of a tooth. A crown covers and protects the entire tooth. When decay or damage is too extensive for a filling to hold reliably, a crown becomes the more durable, long-lasting option. Your exam will clarify which applies to your situation.
In many cases, yes. Teeth that have had root canal treatment often need a crown to protect the remaining tooth structure. Whether a same-day crown is appropriate after a root canal depends on factors like how much natural tooth remains, which we’ll assess during your exam.
Same-day crown treatment can be performed alongside nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or oral sedation for patients who experience anxiety. We’ll talk through your comfort level at your appointment and make sure you feel settled before anything begins.
With regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental visits, ceramic and zirconia crowns commonly last 15 years or more. Habits like teeth grinding can shorten crown longevity, but that’s something we can address with a protective night guard if needed.
For the first 24 hours, softer foods are recommended while the area adjusts. After that, most patients return to their normal diet. Crowns are built to handle regular chewing function, though very hard foods and ice are worth limiting to protect any restoration over time.
No referral is needed. You can call us directly to schedule a consultation or a full exam, and we’ll evaluate the tooth and confirm whether a same-day crown is the right approach. New patients are always welcome.
