Gentle and Effective

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is inhaled through a small nasal hood placed over your nose. Within minutes, you feel a warm sense of calm while staying fully awake and aware. The gas reduces anxiety and eases physical tension so your appointment feels comfortable from start to finish.

The effects wear off within minutes after the hood is removed, meaning no lingering drowsiness and no need for a driver. You can return to your day immediately. For patients in Mountain Home with mild to moderate anxiety, nitrous oxide at The Dome Dentistry and Implants offers reliable comfort without disrupting your schedule.

A Deeper Level of Calm

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed tablet about an hour before your appointment. By the time you sit down, you feel deeply relaxed and drowsy while remaining conscious. Most patients remember very little of the procedure afterward, making this option especially valuable for those whose anxiety goes beyond mild nervousness.

This method is ideal for patients who need more relaxation than nitrous oxide provides, whether due to strong dental fear, a sensitive gag reflex, or longer procedures. You’ll need a driver for the visit, and we recommend resting afterward. At The Dome Dentistry and Implants, we review your full medical history before prescribing oral sedation to ensure it’s the right fit for Mountain Home patients ready to overcome what’s been keeping them away.

Care Without the Fear

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Living with sedation dentistry as an option means discovering improvements you didn’t anticipate. It’s not simply about getting through a procedure. It changes your entire relationship with dental care, turning something you once dreaded into something you can approach with calm and ease.
Finally Get the Care You've Been Avoiding
Months or years of postponed treatment can end with a single decision. Sedation removes the barrier of fear so you can address overdue cleanings, fillings, or more complex work you’ve been putting off.
Some treatments require extended time in the chair. Sedation keeps you comfortable and at ease throughout, so even longer appointments feel manageable and pass more quickly than you’d expect.
With oral sedation, many patients remember little to nothing about the treatment itself. If the sights, sounds, or sensations of dental work trigger your anxiety, this benefit alone can change your experience entirely.
Anxiety causes your muscles to tighten, your jaw to clench, and your body to resist. Sedation eases that physical tension, making it easier for you to stay comfortable and easier for your dentist to work precisely.
When you’re relaxed, your dental team can often complete more treatment in a single appointment. That means fewer total visits, less time away from your schedule, and faster progress toward a healthy mouth.

Comfort Is Within Reach

Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?

Sedation dentistry isn’t only for major procedures or extreme anxiety. It’s available to anyone whose fear, discomfort, or past experiences have made dental visits something to dread. See if your situation fits below.

Dental Anxiety That Keeps You Away

If the thought of sitting in a dental chair causes stress, racing thoughts, or outright avoidance, sedation gives you a practical way to receive care without the emotional burden that’s been holding you back.

Sensitive Teeth or a Strong Gag Reflex

Some patients find even routine cleanings uncomfortable due to heightened sensitivity or a gag reflex that makes treatment difficult. Sedation calms both responses so your appointment can proceed smoothly.

Extensive Treatment Needed in One Visit

When your treatment plan involves multiple procedures or longer chair time, sedation helps you remain comfortable throughout so your dental team can accomplish more in a single appointment.

When Patients Know It's Time

Every patient’s path to sedation dentistry is different, but the underlying feeling is often the same: the desire for care outweighs the fear, and all that’s missing is a way to bridge that gap. Check if these experiences resonate with yours.

Calm From the Start

How Sedation Dentistry Works During Your Visit

Feeling uncertain about sedation is completely normal. Once you understand how it’s administered and what it feels like, most of that uncertainty fades. This is a well-established approach designed around your comfort.
1

Pre-Treatment Consultation

Before any sedation is used, your dentist reviews your medical history, current medications, and comfort preferences to determine which option is right for you. Whether nitrous oxide or oral sedation fits best, the recommendation is based entirely on your health profile, the treatment planned, and how you want to feel during your appointment.
2

Sedation Administration

On the day of your visit, sedation is administered before your dental treatment begins. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small nasal hood and takes effect within minutes, keeping you relaxed but fully awake. Oral sedation involves a prescribed tablet taken before your appointment, producing a deeper state of calm where you remain conscious but feel pleasantly drowsy throughout the procedure.
3

Recovery and Aftercare

Once treatment is complete, nitrous oxide wears off within minutes and you can drive yourself home. Oral sedation requires a longer recovery window, so you’ll need someone to drive you to and from the appointment. Your care team monitors you throughout and provides clear aftercare instructions so you know exactly what to expect as the effects fade.

Walk Out Wondering Why You Waited

You'll soon look back and realize that sedation dentistry made the visit you feared most the easiest one you've ever had.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Feeling nervous about dental visits is more common than you might think, and asking questions is the best way to ease those concerns. Here are the answers our patients find most helpful. If you need more details, our team is here for you.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes. Both nitrous oxide and oral sedation have long, well-established safety records in dental care. Before recommending either option, we review your complete medical history and current medications to ensure the chosen method is safe and appropriate for you specifically.
No. The sedation methods we offer keep you conscious throughout your visit. With nitrous oxide, you’re fully awake but relaxed. Oral sedation produces a deeper calm where you may feel drowsy, but you’ll still be able to respond to your dentist and follow simple instructions.
Most patients describe it as a warm, floating sensation. You’ll feel noticeably relaxed within minutes of breathing through the nasal hood. Sounds may seem distant and time often feels like it’s passing faster than usual. The effects wear off almost immediately once the gas is turned off.
Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed tablet before your appointment, producing a deeper level of relaxation than nitrous oxide. You’ll feel sleepy and may remember very little of the procedure afterward. Unlike nitrous oxide, oral sedation requires someone to drive you to and from the office.
It depends on the method. With nitrous oxide, the effects clear within minutes and you can safely drive yourself home. With oral sedation, you’ll need a friend or family member to bring you to the appointment and drive you back, as the medication takes longer to fully wear off.
Yes. Sedation manages your anxiety and overall comfort, while local anesthesia numbs the specific treatment area so you don’t feel pain. The two work together. Sedation relaxes you emotionally and physically, and the numbing ensures the procedure itself is completely painless.
Sedation is available for virtually any dental treatment, from routine cleanings to implant placement. It’s not limited to complex or surgical procedures. If anxiety prevents you from receiving any type of care, sedation can make that appointment comfortable and manageable.
Sedation is especially helpful in this situation. Both nitrous oxide and oral sedation calm the gag reflex significantly, allowing your dentist to work more efficiently and making the experience much more comfortable for you. Many patients with severe gag reflexes rely on sedation for every visit.
Nitrous oxide clears your system within five to ten minutes after the nasal hood is removed. Oral sedation can take several hours to wear off completely, and you may feel drowsy for the rest of the day. We recommend resting at home and avoiding strenuous activity until the following morning.
For most patients, yes. Oral sedation in particular is effective for significant anxiety because it produces a deep sense of calm and often reduces memory of the procedure. We’ll discuss your anxiety level during your consultation and recommend the option most likely to help you feel comfortable.

I lost part of my tooth over the weekend and was able to get in and be seen on Monday. We made a plan for a follow up appointment to fix the tooth. Extremely happy with this interaction. On my follow-up appointment Dr Gigli repaired my tooth as previously planned. He and his staff are outstanding. The crown procedure was seamless. It is awesome that you can get the whole procedure done in a few hours. Thank you again Dr Gigli!
